In most countries, air-conditioning is seasonal. In Singapore it is a daily necessity. With average temperatures above 30°C and humidity often above 80%, a typical household aircon runs 8 to 12 hours a day, every day of the year. That level of use means dust, mould and grime build up far faster than manufacturers’ “once a year” guidelines assume.

So how often should you actually service your aircon here? The short answer: every 3 months for daily use. The longer answer depends on how you use it.

Recommended aircon servicing schedule in Singapore

How you use your airconGeneral servicingChemical wash
Daily, 8+ hours (bedrooms, home offices)Every 3 monthsOnce a year
A few hours a day or only at nightEvery 4 monthsOnce a year
Occasional use (guest rooms)Every 6 monthsEvery 1–2 years
Offices, shops and F&B outletsEvery 2–3 monthsEvery 6–12 months

If you have pets, live near a construction site or main road, or cook frequently with the aircon on, lean towards the shorter interval — these all add dust and grease to the coil.

Why regular servicing matters

1. Lower electricity bills

A clogged filter and dirty coil restrict airflow, so the compressor has to run longer to reach the temperature you set. Keeping the unit clean is one of the easiest ways to keep your electricity bill in check.

2. Fewer leaks and breakdowns

Most water leaks in Singapore homes are caused by a blocked drainage pipe or condensate tray. Routine servicing flushes the drainage before it overflows — and catches worn parts before they fail on the hottest night of the year.

3. Cleaner, healthier air

In a humid climate, the inside of a fan coil is the perfect place for mould and bacteria to grow. Regular cleaning removes them before they are blown into the room you sleep in.

4. Longer system life

A well-maintained inverter system can last 10 years or more. A neglected one often needs major repairs within five.

What is included in general servicing?

A proper aircon general servicing should cover more than a quick filter rinse. At Arctiq, every unit includes:

  • Washing and drying the air filters
  • Cleaning the front panel, louvres and casing
  • Vacuuming and brushing the evaporator coil
  • Flushing the drainage pipe and clearing the condensate tray
  • Checking the outdoor condenser
  • Checking refrigerant pressure and operating temperature

When general servicing is not enough

If your aircon still leaks, smells or blows warm air after a general service, it usually needs a deeper clean. A chemical wash uses coil cleaner to break down mould and hardened dirt, while a chemical overhaul fully dismantles the unit for the most thorough clean possible. Not sure which you need? Warning signs your aircon is overdue for servicing

  • The room takes noticeably longer to cool down
  • Airflow from the vents feels weak
  • A musty or sour smell when you switch it on
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit
  • Unusual noise, rattling or clicking
  • Your electricity bill has crept up without a change in usage

Save more with a maintenance contract

If you have three or more units, an annual maintenance contract is usually the most cost-effective option. You get four scheduled visits a year at a lower per-unit rate, reminders so you never miss a service, and priority booking if something goes wrong. See our full price list for details.

The bottom line: for most Singapore homes, service your aircon every 3 months and do a chemical wash once a year. It costs far less than a major repair — and you will sleep better for it.
